Sticky Post

It was raining all day, and we were trapped at home. I asked Jake if he wanted to bake our usual sugar cookies. He suggested we make gingerbread cookies instead.
I saw some allergen-free recipes for gingerbread but I wasnt prepared. Some ingredients were not in our pantry. As usual, I had to be creative for my son.
Nothing is impossible for this little guy who came up with ideas to decorate his cookies using whatever was available.
Heres what he made.

About 10% of skin conditions in dogs, are caused by food allergies. Food allergies can cause your dog to itch, cause sores and hotspots, and even cause your dog to pull his own hair out in tufts. If your dog is itching, some of the more common causes are fleas, inhalants, and food allergies. In this post I want to cover all three causes, and advice you on how to find out if food allergies may be the culprit.

If your dog is itching, the first thing to check for is fleas. Take a flea comb (comb that has teeth that are very close together) and comb a section of your dog's coat slowly, parting his hair to look for any signs of black specks or fleas. Go from area to area to check for any signs of fleas. Keep in mind that just one flea is capable of biting your dog up to 400 times a day. If your dog is itching, even if you don't find a flea, you might want to consider giving your dog a bath with a gentle but effective flea shampoo. However, fleas are not the only parasite that causes intense dermititis in dogs. Mites can burrow in your dogs skin causing dry crusty skin lesions, hair loss, and constant itching. This is known as mange or scabies, and if the skin is in this bad of a condition, it is best to get veterinarian assistance. If your dog has fleas or mange, it doesn't mean that they don't have a food allergy, but I would check these things first.

Dogs can also suffer from inhalant allergies, it's known as atopic dermatitis. They can be allergic to certain pollens in the air, dander, grasses, trees, dust and any airborne particle. It is similar to human inhalant allergies, while human exhibit allergy issues with respiratory symptoms, dogs show allergic reactions through their skin. For this type of allergy your veterinarian may recommend prednisone, allergy shots, or topical treatments. Prednisone can have some very serious negative side effects, allergy shots can take 6-12 months to start working (25% of the time they won't work at all), so alternative treatments may sometimes be a better option. Products like pure aloe vera, witch hazel, Colloidal oatmeal, and lime sulfur dip are helpful with itching. Now, back to food allergies...

The ingredients most commonly found in commercial dog foods, cause the highest percentage of food allergies in dogs. Some common ingredients that can cause food allergies are corn, wheat, soy, beef, fish, dairy, and chicken. To see if your dog is itching due to a food allergy, you can place him on a hypoallergenic diet. This diet should have healthy ingredients that are not commonly found in most pet foods (such as duck, elk, bison and more I'll probably think of later). How this works, is you place your dog on a hyoallergenic diet for one month, to see if this relieves the itching. If it seems to relieve the itching, you can go back to the old diet for up to two weeks, and see if the itching returns. If so, your dog probably has a food allergy to one of the ingredients in the old food.

For the 5% to 8% of children and 1% to 2% of adults who have a food allergy, reading labels has gotten easier, courtesy of The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004. Since 2006, companies have been required to clearly state on food labels whether the products contain the top eight food allergens: milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, and tree nuts.
In addition to being careful about what products you buy, cooking and baking more at home will help ensure that someone doesnt accidentally eat something that contains an allergen.
With cooking and baking at home as your goal, here are some practical tips on how to make the necessary substitutions in your familys favorite recipes for the three most difficult food allergies to cook with; wheat, milk and eggs.

Climate change may embitter allergies

  • Oct. 2nd, 2008 at 4:20 AM

In many cases, allergy symptoms are difficult to differentiate from the symptoms of other disorders and illness, such as a cold, a deformity of the nose, or food intolerance. For this reason, many doctors suggest that allergies be properly diagnosed by a board-certified allergist (doctors who treats allergies).

Inflammatory reaction affects the tissue and organs, mainly the skin, mucous, membranes, lungs and gastrointestinal tract are the symptoms of allergy.

Itching and watery eyes, runny congested nose and sinuses, sneezing, respiratory symptoms, headache, rapid heart beat and skin reactions are commonly produced symptoms.

To eliminate some allergies drink lots of water, take fruit juices except for citrus, eat vegetables except corn and tomatoes. Eat brown or white rice, turkey, and white fish like halibut, sole, swordfish except for shell fish, almonds, walnuts or sunflower seeds.

If your allergies are causing you to cough, wheeze and have trouble breathing you should see an allergist, to avoid self-administration of inappropriate medications.

I hate Fall time. Not the season I look forward to the cooler weather and being able to get away from the oppressive summer heat. No, what I do not like about Fall season, is it causes my allergies to flare up. Every time the weather changes or another cold front blows in it brings in a whole host of pollen that set my allergies off.
I keep telling my family that I am a weather forecaster. How about you? Are you able to predict when the next front is due to arrive in your area about a day before it comes? I can tell when the next front is coming. My nose starts to run, my eyes start to water, and the pressure starts to build.
Sinus headaches, I really dont like them. The worst part of a sinus headache is the unrelenting pressure. The pain and pressure. Many a time I have wished that I could drill a hole in the side of my head and drain the crap out. Not the best thing long term but you know what I am talking about.
There is procedure that doctors do to drain the sinus via nose. It looks pretty weird, but when you have severely impacted sinus to the point that the infection is making you really sick, you will do just about anything to stop the pain.
A sinus infection can make you really sick. Thats because when you get a sinus infection it can cause the little drain tubes to get plugged up. When that happens bacteria can start to grow in the mucus and cause a really bad infection. To the point where the sinus become filled with puss.
You dont think so. Be glad that you havent had the bad experience of having a really bad sinus infection. Years ago my dad was admitted to the local hospital they though he had viral meningitis. After all of the tests came back negative, they checked his sinuses and realized that they were severely impacted, a nice way of saying that they were abscessing and filled with puss. The doctors drained his sinuses and within a day he was back to his normal self.
If you are like me your tired of getting sinus infection after sinus infection and having to take all of the antibiotics. I came across this very powerful book that shows us fellow allergy and asthma sufferers how we can naturally prevent allergy and asthma attacks. If your ready to stop suffering from allergies that lead to sinus infections it is time to read dramatic asthma relief.

Intellectual faculties Sustenance ALLERGIES

  • Sep. 16th, 2008 at 1:51 AM

Because September is National Food Safety Education Month, there’s no better time to discuss food allergies.  More than 160 foods exist that can cause reactions for people with food allergies.  Eight most common allergenic foods listed by the law are named:
1.    Milk
2.    Eggs
3.    Fish (e.g., bass, flounder, cod)
4.    Crustacean shellfish (e.g., crab, lobster, shrimp)
5.    Tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans)
6.    Peanuts
7.    Wheat
8.    Soybeans
The Food Allergen Labeling Consumer Protection Act of 2004, requires that food regulated by the FDA, local and imported, list source of ingredients.  (Foods not regulated by the FDA are meat, poultry, and certain egg products.)
Allergic reactions may include: hives, coughing, wheezing, rash, itchy sensation in the mouth, swelling of the face, tongue, or lip, vomiting and/or diarrhea, swelling of the throat and vocal cords, and difficulty in breathing.
A person with food allergies can experience a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis, following ingestion of a food allergen.  Mild symptoms that occur after ingesting food allergens can sometime become more severe, and should be treated promptly.
Anaphylaxis can lead to: severe lowering of blood pressure and shock (anaphylactic shock), constricted airways in the lungs, and extreme swelling of the throat.  It is estimated that anaphylaxis to food results in 30,000 emergency room visits, 2,000 hospitalizations, and 150 deaths annually.
From first-hand experience, we recommend a person with tendencies toward food allergies carry an antihistamine with them at all times.  Prompt administration of epinephrine by autoinjector (e.g., Epi-pen) during early symptoms of anaphylaxis may help prevent this serious situation.

Battling Back Food Allergies

  • Aug. 26th, 2008 at 4:10 PM

Food allergies limit more than your menu selections. They can place some restaurants off limits, isolate your allergic child in the cafeteria, make you more reluctant to visit family and friends for dinner, and complicate your life with a host of precautionary measures and sometimes paralyzing fear.
I reveal common-sense precautions that, once they become habit, enable you to live a full, enjoyable life without becoming paralyzed by undo fears. I equip you with everything you need to decipher labels, discover tasty alternatives for the foods you love, and even whip up a few delicious allergen-free meals and desserts in your own kitchen.
Avoiding the foods youre allergic to, however, is rarely 100 percent effective in preventing reactions. The trick to dealing with the possibility of a reaction is to be prepared 100 percent of the time. By having the medications you need to immediately respond in the event of an emergency, you can decrease the fear factor by a factor of ten and establish a more relaxed form of vigilance.
An allergic reaction can be a terrifying experience, but by mastering a few allergen-avoidance techniques and remaining well-prepared to respond immediately in the event of a reaction, you can limit the risk and ease your mind.

Kevin lacked oxygen at birth, so in the first year of life, I already saw that he was not developing like my other kids (he is our 5th). His motor skills lagged and he cried a lot, didnt sleep so well, etc.
At two, his behavior was just not right. He never responded right to correction, would throw things in anger or frustration, cried all the time, especially when waking up, basically never happy. He didnt walk until two and then he would fall down constantly.
He also began to always be starving. When he was really hungry, his face would get distorted and frozen in a strange way. I now think he was having seizures of sorts.
We did not vaccinate at all and we figured out that if we fed him lots of protein type foods like meats, he would relax his body and face and be able to go play for a bit until it happened all over again in a short time.
I do think that because we didnt vaccinate and figured out to keep feeding him this way, we were able to coast along like this for years. He had learning disabilities, lacked social skills and continued to have autistic traits like sensory issues, hiding under blankets, reacting to sounds, not liking people around, rigid in routines, and spinning and going on his head along with head banging.
Long story shorter, we did get a diagnosis of Aspergers at one point. We took him to doctor after doctor, specialist after specialist to no avail. He also strangely was NEVER once sick (we later learned that his immune system was not working a bit).
At 9 years old, he got pneumonia, followed by asthma and allergies. His eating had escalated to the point of feeding him every 20-30 minutes or he would have gigantic meltdowns. We eventually could not even have people over.
He was given an inhaler for the asthma and suddenly, without us making the connection, he began to not respond when called, became extremely hyperactive and began to run away at all hours of the day and night requiring police to find him and being very dangerous (we once lost him in the middle of downtown Chicago). He would also try to jump out of moving vehicles, out of windows and required constant restraining.
The seizures got bad, he would fall down the stairs and lose consciousness several times per day. They tried psych drugs and he almost died twice from his reaction to them (I am now grateful that we couldnt go that route).
We became so desperate that we brought him home from hospital and got deadbolts to keep him from running, did all our own restraining and called alternative docs to help us.
We began kefir and diet from nutritionist (basically a BED/GAPS version)*, took him off inhaler. His allergies were totally out of control, he could barely open his eyes from swelling, and his chin was deformed and swollen, his belly too, his whole body. He would only eat junk food and fast foods and it was incredibly difficult to transition him to the diet.
The DAN (Defeat Autism Now) protocols we followed, made him worse in lots of ways b/c the chelation made him extremely violent, the B12 shots kept him awake for nights on end without any sleep, the antifungals and all those other interventions were nightmarish for him.
Eventually, I resolved to use only foods and do this without any kind of doctors. So for this past year, I researched and researched and was determined to bring him back from this state. We have done a combo of GAPS (and BED) very successfully along with lots of fermented foods and drinks.
The allergies and asthma are 100% gone, the seizures we have had only one in 65 days and very mild (compared to 5-10 per day). He sings every morning and has cried once in the last 2.5 months (he used to cry for 1-3 hours at a time each day) and he can go outside again without running away. He is in martial arts, acting appropriately at church, having eye contact, no autistic traits of late and learning academics after two years of not being able to open a book. He reads before bed at an 8th grade level.
It is a total absolute miracle to which I give God all the credit (there has been endless prayer at our house). I know He led us to this diet and this recovery.
I am still fearful of regression (its so hard to believe its for real, you know) and I also fully realize that it will be possibly two more years before he is fully detoxed. The rashes he has had have been monumental and scary and he would have terrible seizures when the detox and die off was going too quickly. I think we still have a lot to learn and a lot of work to do but there seems to be a light at the end of our tunnel.
I think this is a very powerful diet and detox protocol and it really does work. I feel that there is much hope and healing and we are giving our kids an opportunity at a life and future.

Benefits of Honey Intake
The New Nation (Bangladesh), 8/22/2008

Honey is composed of sugars like glucose and fructose and minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron and phosphate. It contains vitamins B1, B2, C, B6, B5 and B3 all of which change according to the qualities of the nectar and pollen. Besides the above, copper, iodine, and zinc exist in it in small quantities. Several kinds of hormones are also present in it.

Approximately one half of the human diet is derived directly or indirectly from crops pollinated by bees. Today honeybees are an essential part of a healthy agriculture economy. If you have allergies, honey can be beneficial. If you eat honey that is local to your area, it may prevent your seasonal allergies. Bees use the pollen from local plants and eventually it ends up in your honey.

Honey may also be good for your skin. It has the ability to attract water. You can use honey instead of alpha hydroxy masks because of its high content of the acid. It is also safe for sensitive skin

There is evidence that honey diluted in water will help with your stomach-aches and dehydration.

Germ-Fighting Properties

Do you have a cut? Honey is a natural antiseptic. Medical journals cite more than 600 cases in which honey was employed to treat wounds. By applying honey to your wounds, you prevent infections. Honey contains antimicrobial agents, which prevents infections by killing the bacteria in and around your wounds. When using honey it may help to heat it up before putting it on your wound (caution test the heat before you place it on the wound). Many types of bacteria can't survive in honey, so wounds heal, swelling eases, and tissue can grow back.

Honey may also be effective in the treatment of your ulcers. In Europe, honey has been used internally to help cure ulcers, particularly stomach ulcers.

Burns, too, heal better with honey, studies show. The advantage of honey is that it not only prevents infections from occurring, it actually accelerates skin healing.. Since the sugar in honey absorbs water it helps to trap some of the moisture so that the bacteria and other microbes can't grow as easily as in other food

To improve eyesight, one should mix two teaspoons of honey with carrot juice and consume regularly.

According to research conducted by Madeep Kaur, of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Samrala in Punjab, India, there are plenty of home remedies from honey. Improvement of the eyesight is only one such cure.

Those suffering from cold, cough, and chest congestion can benefit from two teaspoons of honey with equal quantity of ginger juice consumed frequently.

According to Madeep Kaur's research paper, one spoon of fresh honey mixed with the juice of half a lemon in a glass of lukewarm water taken first thing in the morning is very effective for constipation, hyperacidity, and obesity.

Regular use of two teaspoons of honey mixed with one teaspoon of garlic juice helps control blood pressure.
